Accessible travel
Travelling by train
If you’re a disabled or elderly person, you can pre-book journey assistance through Passenger Assist. This includes help with boarding and changing trains, and additional support during your journey.
- The Passenger Assist Team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week (excluding 25 and 26 December), and requests can be made as little as two hours before travel.
- You can also request assistance when you arrive at the station, although we may not be able to help straight away.
- If the station is unstaffed, please go to the platform where a member of the onboard team will help you onto the train.
Visit the Passenger Assist website for full details about the support available.
Travelling by bus
Our Bus Passenger Charter pledges to deliver accessible services to all passengers. If you’d like more details, or you have any questions, please contact the company that operates the buses on your route.
Assistance dogs
All assistance animals can travel on our buses, including:
- guide dogs for the blind (including guide dogs in training with a registered puppy walker)
- hearing dogs for deaf people
- registered support dogs
- canine partners for independence
Please let the driver know if you need help identifying your destination.
Priority seating
Priority seating for people with limited mobility is clearly labelled on all our buses.
Wheelchairs
- Most buses have space for one wheelchair, and are either low-floor or have a ramp.
- Please position your chair back against the ‘ironing board’ upright cushion to travel safely.
Mobility scooters
- Class 2 scooters with three or four wheels can board our buses, provided they are no more than 600mm wide and 1000mm long, with a turning radius not exceeding 1,200mm.
- If you’re not sure whether your scooter will fit, call 0808 196 2632 or email [email protected] to arrange a home visit from an accessibility officer.
- Some operators require you to have a ‘permit for travel’ before boarding with a scooter. Please check with the bus company that runs the relevant service.
- Please position your chair back against the ‘ironing board’ upright cushion to travel safely.
Buggies and prams
- The number of buggies/prams we can carry at once depend on their shapes and sizes.
- A small, lightweight buggy/pram may be more appropriate for use on our buses.
- If a wheelchair user wants to board, the driver will ask you to fold your buggy/pram to make room.
